contraceptive pill | anon | Friday, June 29, 2007 |
Question: Dear Bro Ignatius Mary My daughter has been diagnosed with Poly cystic Ovary Syndrome. As part of the treatment the endocrinologist said that she would need to use the contraceptive pill. I was shocked as my daughter is only 17 years old. We did not take the script but opted to wait and see how her health progressed. What is the church position on this? God Bless |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Anon: Pope John Paul II said that "Contraception is to be judged so profoundly illicit that it can never be justified for any reason." While contraceptives are commonly used to treat various medical conditions, it is usually possible to find alternatives. In conferring with our ministry's medical consultant he found that research is showing that oral hypoglycemic agents used to treat diabetesmay promise to be a good alternative to birth control pills in the treatment of conditions like that of your daughter. You may want to discuss this possibility with your doctor. The point is that contraception medication is not necessarily the only choice. I would get a second opinion, or even a third. If contraceptive medication is used, there may be a moral way to allow it. It has been suggested by Pro-Life doctors, like Dr. Paul Hayes, that the contraceptive medication may be used morally IF... ...IF... there is no chance of a contraceptive effect taking place. This means that in a chaste woman there would be no contraceptive effect because she is not having sex. In a married women this would mean that while on the contraceptive medication she would have to abstain from sex with her husband. Abstinence from sex is the ONLY way using this medication can possibly be considered. That is the only way to eliminate the contraceptive effect which can NEVER be accepted.
