Question:

what happened to mardi gras ive read that it used to be a fesival to prepare for lent, now its just a celibration of debachery.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Mara:

Mardi Gras is suppose to be a time of gaiety before the rigors of Lent. As such the activities of Mardi Gras is that of a party, pancakes, burgers, and other food, parades, performances and other good and clean fun.

Most of the Mardi Gras celebrations maintain that good ordinary fun and celebration. It is the New Orleans Mardi Gras that we have the image of debauchery.

Even in the New Orleans Mardi Gras there is the normal, family-oriented activities. And then there are the reprobate, drunken debauchery that we always hear about.

In any event, while the world goes mad all around us, we can be the light that shines the love and purity of God to those around us.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
