Where did the apostles get the baskets from? Linda Tuesday, June 12, 2007

Question:

Dear Bro. Ignatius;

My adult son (18) asked a thoughtful question on the miracle of the multiplation of the loaves. This is where Our Lord is out in a wilderness or barren place/dessert and the people come out and He teaches them. When there isn't enough food He takes the few fishes and loaves, blesses them, the apostles distribute them and everyone has enough. There are 12 basketfuls left.

My son's question is where did the baskets come from? In other words where did the apostles get the baskets to put the left over bread in?

The only answer that occured to me was that because they didn't have plastic or paper bags to carry things in they would use baskets for extra clothes, baby things, etc.

Because I haven't studied the culture of that time and how they did household things etc. I couldn't answer any more than that. Could you give any more info other than that?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Linda:

I think you about covered it. Out of a crowd of 5000 men, plus their wives and children (probably a total crowd of more then 15,000-20,000) I am sure the apostles could secure the donation 12 baskets from among the people.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
