Interim Version of the Roman Breviary Linda Sunday, June 3, 2007

Question:

Dear Bro. Ignatius;
Lately I've been drawn to praying the Morning Prayer of the office. I first started to pray the Morning and Evening prayers from the Magnificat booklet. Then I found a book at a tag sale called "The Prayer of the Church: An Interim Version of the New Roman Breviary" This was written in 1969 or so while the Sacred Congregation for Divine Worship was revising the Divine Office. There was an explaination on how to use it and I just started with the Morining prayer. I see that the Magnificat is a shorter version of the Morning prayer. The Magnificat has only one psalm while the Interim Version of the Breviary has three. Also the prayers I feel are more reverent. Anyway my question is can I use this interim version any more or must I get another? Is this version allowed for lay people to use? I don't have funds now to purchase another one, is there something online?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Linda:

You can certainly use that version for personal devotion. To truly participate in the Prayer of the Church you would probably have to get the approved version. Your bishop could probably grant you permission to use that version. But....

...There is a place you can download the daily morning prayer that is the approved version. It is on the Liturgy of Hours Apostolate.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
