Is Jesus upset at me? | Matthew | Friday, June 1, 2007 |
Question: Brother Ignatius, I struggle from OCD, as i may have mentioned to you before, i'm not sure if i have. I take a medication that really helps as far as the symptoms of panic attacks and uncontrollable racing thoughts, but i still get the occasional daily obsession. Recently, while at Mass as i prepare to receive the Holy Eucharist. All of these things that i've read about the heretic Sedevacantists pop into my head and i hear the thought "What if they are right and the Eucharist really isn't valid?" I know all of the reasons why they are wrong because i've read them all, so you don't have to go through all of that. I am completely obedient to Holy Mother Church (I loved your article on Obedience) but i still get the damned thoughts and they just don't go away! Is Jesus upset at me for even entertaining these thoughts? I never want to offend him in ANY way, then i obsess about whether i am offending him by entertaining these thoughts. How much of it is from Satan and how much of it is my own rumination? Your help Brother is so much appreciated. Thank you in advance! In Christ Jesus, Matt |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Matthew: It is neither sin, or upsetting to Jesus, if you have unwanted thoughts. Your thoughts along these lines are unwanted and either a factor of your OCD or influence from the Enemy, or both. But, they are unwanted and are coming to you in a way that is beyond your direct control. When you have these unwanted thoughts, say "STOP, I reject these thoughts. I choose to only have thoughts pleasing to the Holy Spirit." As often as you have these thoughts, say this to yourself. If you have the unwanted thoughts 100 times a day, then say this 100 times a day. Be sure to actually say the word "STOP" and then follow with the rest of the sentence. If you are in a place where it is possible, say this out loud. If not, then say this under your breath, or just in your mind, but say it. Over time, if you do this each and every time, it may help. In any event, Jesus is not upset with you because you have unwanted thoughts. It is not sin, either, since they are unwanted and you can't control them. Be at peace. God knows your heart, even if your mind is a little uncontrollable at times because of your OCD. God Bless, Footer Notes: This forum is for general questions on the faith.
