Question:

just a comment if any of my daughters are ever raped you can bet your butt Ill get them emergency contraception and I could care less what the Church thinks of it.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Robert:

Well, when you say that you could care less what the Church teaches about this or any other topic, you are saying that you care less about what God says.

For myself, I do not have to speculate about this subject. I have had more than one family member raped. Emergency contraception was not administered and no pregnancy occurred, but I would not have recommended to them any procedure that would have caused the homicide of a baby.

While there is some speculation in Moral Theology that emergency contraception may be possible IF the woman is not pregnant at the time of taking the medication, all agree that such contraceptive cannot be used to abort a baby.

The problem with this theory is the difficulty in knowing for certain within only a few hours of the rape whether or not a woman has conceived . Unless we can know for certain, we cannot chance killing an innocent baby (it is not the baby's fault that his father is a rapist).

If pregnancy does occur from a rape (which is rare) the baby is still a blessing. Babies are a blessing ALWAYS and under ALL circumstances. Who knows but that baby may grow up to find a cure for cancer. But even if that baby grows up to be a unemployed garbage collector on welfare a human life is sacred -- ALWAYS.

We need to care about what God says. If we have problems with the ways of God, then we need to suspend our arrogance and defiance and submit to God without understanding. That is the basis of humility. To fail in that humility is to do the same thing that Lucifer did to get kicked out of heaven.

We serve God, not ourselves or our opinions.

I hope, sir that you will not be so arrogant, if God forbid the time should come, that you will tell God to flip off and ignore His will concerning this or any other matter.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
