Question:

If you consider playboy/girl magazine porn. The ive got a wole lot more you should conden like the ceiling of the sisten chapel, loads in variouse other churchs and museums. Get off your high horse and stop being a hypocrit.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Erin:

I cannot get on a high horse; I am too fat.

My dear, Playboy and playgirl is without question pornography. The Sistine Chapel an other similar art is without question not pornography.

Pornography, by definition, is writing or pictures and images of a sexual explicit nature designed for sexual stimulation, or prurient interest.

There is only one reason Playboy and Playgirl publish -- to make money by titillating sexual lust and desire in the "readers." The philosophy of those magazines is hedonistic and they unabashedly promote lust.

The Sistine Chapel and similar art is focused and purposed in the presentation of the beauty of the human form, God's creation. There is just no comparison.

As for being a hypocrite, my dear Erin, how can I be a hypocrite? I practice what I preach, and if I fail at what I believe, such as looking at pornography, then I recognize my sin and present that sin in the Sacrament of Confession all of which is consistent with my beliefs.

When you posted this "question" you identified yourself as a Catholic. It would be hypocritical to be a Catholic and think that Playboy is okay.

The official Catholic teaching is:

2354 Pornography consists in removing real or simulated sexual acts from the intimacy of the partners, in order to display them deliberately to third parties. It offends against chastity because it perverts the conjugal act, the intimate giving of spouses to each other. It does grave injury to the dignity of its participants (actors, vendors, the public), since each one becomes an object of base pleasure and illicit profit for others. It immerses all who are involved in the illusion of a fantasy world. It is a grave offense. Civil authorities should prevent the production and distribution of pornographic materials.

God Bless,
Bro Ignatius Mary
