Question Title Posted By Question Date
Augustine of Hippo's sister Elena Saturday, April 21, 2007

Question:

I am trying to find out about the name of Augustine of Hippo's sister. Augustine does not name his sister either in his Confessions, or in his epistles to Felicitas (in which he mentions that his sister was the previous abbess of Felicitas's monastery). The majority of secondary literature that I have read states that his sister's name is unknown.

However, I have recently read an article in the Catholic Encyclopedia (NewAdvent), under 'St. Monica', that Augustine's sister was called Perpetua.

I am really interested to discover whether this is a Catholic tradition and, if so, where it originated. I would especially be grateful for any references to primary sources for me to follow up further. I am currently writing a chapter of my thesis on the martyrs Perpetua and Felicitas and I am keen to see whether these two martyrs' names were also the names of Augustine's sister and the woman who followed her as abbess of her monastery.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Elena:

The information that St. Monica had three children, Augustine the eldest, Navigius, and a daughter, Perpetua is repeated often through Catholic sourcebooks including the "Lives of the Saints."

As to a primary source for this information I cannot help you, but maybe I can refer you to someone who can. Professor Lawrence S. Cunningham is John A. O'Brien Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame. He repeats this information in his writings. Perhaps he can answer your question.

Professor Cunningham's address is:
