Re: Palm Branches Linda Thursday, February 17, 2005

Question:

Dear Brother;

In your reply to Renita about disposing of Palm Branches you mentioned that the proper way is to burn them prior to burying them.

In our family we started a family tradition when our children were young to bring on Palm Sunday all the old or last years palms and bury them at the graves of loved family and friends while praying for their souls. We didn't burn them first just dug a small hole and placed them in the ground, covered them with dirt and prayed for the souls. Is this another proper way? We really didn't have the intention of disposing of the palms as much as honoring the graves, setting the ground aside for God and praying for the people's souls. It also had a way of making the day holy and a great way to start "Holy Week". We still do this and our adult children still join us.

Is this a proper way to handle the sacramental (palms)?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Linda:

I think you have a very nice family tradition and should continue with it. Burying the palm branches returns the palm to the ground which is appropriate and since you are not actually disposing of it, but intending to bless the grave, you are doing just fine.

God Bless,
Bro.Ignatius Mary
