Question:

Hi Brother,

I read your reply to Rosa about the Vatican's approval of the Harry Potter books, and I saw the part from the Catechism of the Catholic Church about witchcraft and magic.

I was just wondering, would that criteria make books like the Lord of the Rings, the Chronicles of Narnia, A Christmas Carol, or any fantasy novel for that matter, unacceptable to read? Because they all have forms of magic/witchcraft in them.

Thanks,

Julie

P.S. I hope your mother is feeling much better.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Julie:

As mentioned in previous posts, what makes Harry Potter bad is that it is written from the point-of-view and worldview of witchcraft. Lord of the Rings, Chronicle of Narnia, and A Christmas Carol are not. Those novels are written from a Christian worldview.

It is one thing to write a story that includes witches and magic, it is something quite different, however, to write a story with witches and magic represented as the normative worldview.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary

P.S. My mother is recovery miraculously. Praise God.
