Question:
I was biased against it before I went to see it, but the family insisted, so I thought I would give it a shot. I fully appreciate your comments in the earlier post. However, as I watched it, I got to thinking (and asking myself) what exactly is the difference between HP and Science Fiction movies (or shows) where some supernatural evil force is at war with us (natural beings).
Frankly, I don't see the difference. Whether they are called "witches" or "Klingons" seems to me to just be semantics and personal preference by the writer as to who the bad guy is.
Can you either 1) explain the difference or 2) indicate to me that Sci-Fi movies are equally objectionable - because, to be honest - it has never crossed my mind?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Len:
I just recently answered a question about the difference between Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. You might want to view that.
Essentially, the problem with Harry Potter is that it is written from the point-of-view (worldview) of witchcraft. Lord of the Rings is written from the worldview of Catholicism.
The difference between Harry Potter and "some" other science fiction stories is that the other stories are told "about" the theme and characters who may be magical or witches and such. The worldview is usually generic or neutral. This is not the case with Harry Potter which is written and presented from a worldview of witchcraft.
Harry Potter encourages kids to seek solutions to life's problems through ungodly practices of magic and divination. Studies in England, I believe it was, showed that children into Harry Potter were significantly more likely to become interested in the occult and to dabble into the occult.
There are many other shows equally as bad. Most of the Saturday morning "super-power" cartoons are terrible. They also present a "good v. bad" scenario in a way that is dangerous to religious sensibilities. Some of these cartoons actually present an occult, witchcraft, or otherwise new age worldview.
We have to understand that there is no such thing as "good magic" and "bad magic"; all such magic is from the devil. These magical powers and forces presented as "powers and forces in themselves" that we merely manipulate are contrary to the Christian worldview. Even if "good magic" beats out "bad magic" in these shows this is not accurate to the Christian worldview; the ends do not justify the means.
Also in much of Science Fiction the "powers" are not magical but are "technological" according to the level of scientific technology of the time period depicted.
The original Star Trek, the Outer Limits, the Twilight Zone were all morality plays that usually taught a moral that was beneficial.
The Star Trek New Generation (in some episodes), however, can be dripping with liberal propaganda or new age nonsense. Many of the newer Sci Fi shows tend toward sexual perversion, a general lack of morality or amorality, and more direct new age ideas.
I am not a "pick on Harry Potter" kick. I am concerned about Harry Potter because of its impact and the intensity of the witchcraft worldview presented in its story. I am also appalled at the outright new age and occult indoctrination of many Saturday Morning cartoons, by the perversion that the Disney Studios are producing (they are the number one perveyor of illicit sexuality on TV today), and terribly corrupting influences of most of TV and movies these days.
The Sci Fi channel has a totally reprobate series I think is called "Lex". I have watched it a couple of times and that was enough for the protection of my soul.
It matters what we allow into our brains -- what we watch, read, listen to, play with.
God Bless, Bro. Ignatius Mary
