abortion and beatific vision James Saturday, January 15, 2005

Question:

Dear brother,

Here I am again. First of all, I would like to thank you for answering my previous questions.

I would like to ask your opinion about the fate of the souls of children killed in the womb of their mother. Do they stay forever in Limbo (in natural happiness) since they were not baptized and thus they were not washed from the taint of original sin or do they still go to heaven(supernatural happiness of the Beatific Vision) on judgment day?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear James:

I deleted your question about the aliens. We need to keep posts to one topic. If you repost your question on the aliens issue I will be happy to answer it.

As for the fate of aborted babies there are a couple of theories:

1) the babies may benefit from a "Baptism of Desire" since it is the desire of the Church to baptize them, even if it is not the parents' plan.

2) the babies may benefit from a "Baptism of Blood" since they are being killed in an action that is contrary to the faith.

There are problems with both these theories, but the bottom line is that we just do not know and it is dangerous to speculate too far beyond what the Church teaches. The Church teaching, from the Catechism, is:

1261 As regards children who have died without Baptism, the Church can only entrust them to the mercy of God, as she does in her funeral rites for them. Indeed, the great mercy of God who desires that all men should be saved, and Jesus' tenderness toward children which caused him to say: "Let the children come to me, do not hinder them," allow us to hope that there is a way of salvation for children who have died without Baptism. All the more urgent is the Church's call not to prevent little children coming to Christ through the gift of holy Baptism.

The Church can only entrust the unbaptized babies to the mercy of God. If a baptism of desire or of blood does not apply, then we can hope for a state of natural bliss for such children. If it does apply then we can hope for a supernatural bliss in the beatific vision for such children.

That is as far as we can dare speculate.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
