Question: Is it permissable for a married couple to video tape themselves sexually ?- not for third party viewing - simply having some sexual fun. |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Rick: No, this would be a violation of the virtue of modesty, purity, and chastity, and a volation against marriage itself. A video tape of sex is psuedo-pornography and nothing more because it remove the marital embrace from within the context of mutual self-giving and intimacy of the married couple and reduces it to mere images. I say it is psuedo-pornography because it lacks the element of distribution to third parties that is part of the formal definition of pornography. The Catehism says this about pornography:
While this Catechism paragraph is discussing pornography in the usual sense, the operative principles are in bold. These principles are broken when a couple tapes their own love-making even if they intend to not show the video to others. Why take the beauty of God's gift of the marital embrace and reduce it to mere images? The couple needs to respect each other, their marriage and sexaulity, and God's intent for sexuality within the intimacy of marriage. God Bless,
