Question Title Posted By Question Date
Bible Commentary Joel Tuesday, January 11, 2005

Question:

I am looking for a Christian, preferably Catholic, commentary on the Old Testament. I notice that you have quoted the Navarre Bible Commentary a number of times. Is this a standard text? Are there others you would recommend? Both popular and fairly scholarly works will be of interest to me. If you can tell me where to obtain the books, it will also be helpful (an internet site, even a pay one, that has a good commentary woudl also be useful)

Please bear in mind that I am very much an outsider, but I am interested in understanding your viewpoint.

Thanks for your time.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Joel:

The Navarre Bible Commentary is about the best general commentary published today. You can purchase these volumes from Amazon. This link will take you to the Pentateuch volume, but at the bottom of the page you will find other links to other volumes.

I would also recommend the online Catholic Encyclopedia of 1917. It will give you a lot of background and history and definition of Catholic teaching and doctrine.

Then one of the best commentaries available on the Catholic teaching is the Catechism of the Catholic Church (online). It is fully footnoted with references to Scripture and other documents. To purchase the Catechism Click here. Always be sure to get the "Second Edition". The Catechism book has many indexes, including an index to Bible verses quoted in the text.

The "old" version (not the new version) of the St. Jerome Commentary can be useful as well. You will likely have to search for this in a used book store or a book finder service.

There are commentaries on some books of the Bible by the renowed theologian, Fr. Most. You can find these, and other of his articles, at the The MOST Theological Collection.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
