Mary and the colour blue | Rosa | Monday, January 3, 2005 |
Question: Why is Mary so often depicted wearing blue, and associated with the colour? |
||
Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Rosa: Quoting from a website on this subject:
St. Denis in 1140 created a color of blue never seen before. Within a few decades blue became a common color for the Virgin Mary and also a color of royalty. The color blue in the first few centuries was considered evil. For several centuries there was much debate and controvesy over color in Church depictions. In some areas no color at all was used in the Church buildings. Eventually it color was considered to have divine symbolism and began to be used. The first time Mary was depicted with a blue mantle was probably around A.D. 500, as mentioned above. God Bless,
