Re: purgatory and forgiveness Rosa Monday, January 3, 2005

Question:

I have a question about your answer to Chantal on Monday, December 27, 2004 under "purgatory and forgiveness." You said, "Purgatory is a place to purge the residue of grave sin, not the grave sin itself, and also any outstanding venial sins." What did you mean by outstanding venial sins?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Rosa:

The Catehcism quote I including in that post included a quote from St. Pope Gregory the Great:

As for certain lesser faults, we must believe that, before the Final Judgment, there is a purifying fire. He who is truth says that whoever utters blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will be pardoned neither in this age nor in the age to come. From this sentence we understand that certain offenses can be forgiven in this age, but certain others in the age to come.

"Lessor faults" is another term for "venial sins". Jesus implies the possibility of certain sins begin forgiven "in the age to come" when he taught that blasphemy of the Holy Spirit could not be forgiven in that "age to come."

We know that these sins forgiven in the "age to come" cannot be mortal sins because to die with mortal sin on one's soul results in hell. Thus this must be talking about venial sins.

Venial sins in this life can be forgiven through an act of contrition, good works, and receiving the Eucharist. If we die with unforgiven venial sins, then we can have those venial sins forgiven and purged from us in Purgatory.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
