Question:

Some men at church have been asking me to make a "Cursillo Weekend." It sounds like a kind of high-powered retreat, but they are not very forthcoming on the details. I researched it on the Internet, and couldn't learn much. I am suspicious of "movements" within the Church, especially when they seem to produce little groups that only seem to talk to one another in the group. Is cursillo doctrinally sound, and does the church approve of it?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Donnie:

I have never been to a Cursillo so I cannot personally comment on it. Some of the founding members of the Order of the Legion of St. Michael have been to Cursillo, however. They report that it is a wonderful experience.

From what I know of Cursillo, it seems to be a good thing. Cursillo has been praised and blessed by Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul II.

From the Cursillo Newsletter I found this:

The Cursillo Movement has been historically recognized by the Catholic Church. Below is a brief list of comments made by two popes:

  • "I bless Cursillos; and I will bless them not with one hand but with both hands" (Bishop Juan Hervas in the annual gathering in 1949 - Mallorca).

  • "Cursillos de Cristiandad: that is the word, purified through experience, affirmed by its fruits, that today travels with citizenship papers throughout the world." (Pope Paul VI "1st World Ultreya" May 28, 1966)

  • It was Pope Paul the VI who gave the Cursillo Movement its Patron Saint Paul. The designation of the Great Evangelist as the Cursillo Patron is one of the strongest recognition of the central goal of Cursillo-Evangelization of their environments by those supported by the Cursillo Method introduced in the short course that give Cursillo it’s name.

  • "The Cursillo method helps transform the environment by way of Christianity where the person lives and works through the commitment of men and women who have been convince through their encounter with Christ." (Pope John Paul II "3rd World Ultreya" July 29, 2000).

It was at a May 2002 meeting with Cursillo representatives that Pope John Paul II encouraged the process of discernment that led to the official decree on June 11, 2004.

God bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
