Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear David: As you found out, making a vow concerning an addiction is not wise. The force of the addiction is likely to overpower you. It is better make a simple promise to God to try to stop smoking, ask for His help, and perhaps find help through the various stop-smoking programs. What you need to do is to go to your parish priest and ask him to give you a dispensation from the vow. This releases you from the obligation to fulfill the vow. Difficulty in keeping the vow is one of the proper reasons for dispensation. God Bless, Footer Notes: This forum is for general questions on the faith.
