Question Title Posted By Question Date
use of St. Michael's medal on cross Linda Saturday, December 11, 2004

Question:

Dear Brother Ignatius;

May God bless you on this wonderful feast day of Our Lady of Gaudalupe!

Could you tell me the signficance of a cross I have. It is a gold colored plain cross and right over the crossbeams of the cross in the very center is a medal shaped like a shield with a figure of St. Michael on it. Around the shield are the words "St. Michael, protect us".

How is this cross to be used? I have it hanging on the wall above my holy water font. Should it be used a different way and by only certain people? What is the history of this sacramental? Thank you for your time and patience with my questions.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Linda:

This cross sounds like it is a devotional cross. The most famous devotional cross is probably the St. Benedict Cross that contains the St. Benedict medal in the middle of the the crossbeams.

You can use this cross in the same manner you would any cross. Having it hang above the Holy Water font is fine.

I have no idea the history of this particular devotional cross. I imagine it was just created as a devotion to St. Michael.

I do like the idea, especially since I am with the Order of the Legion of St. Michael. I would love to find a store that carries this item, but a quick look on the Internet did not find anything.

God bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
