When does the Body infused with the Soul | Jon | Sunday, November 28, 2004 |
Question: Hello Br. Thank you for all your help and knowledge. You are in my offerings for good health. My question is this. Life is started at conception, but when is the Soul combined? If the Soul is combined whole with the body at conception, then do twins share the same soul? Also can you explain the differance between the Church allowing birth control for rape victims http://www.usccb.org/bishops/directives.htm#partfour see part 3 dir 36. But not allow it in marriage who has a serios need, in such case as severe health risk. Is it becuase one is forced? This said does it make Artificial Birth Control not a intrinsic evil? Peace be with you :-) Big Jon |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Jon: The soul is created by God and infused into the person at the moment of conception. Twins do not have the same soul. God creates a soul for each individual. I am not sure of the biological mechanics of twins, but if the twins are created at the moment of conception, then there are two people at the begining and God infuses an individual soul into each of them. If what happens is that one person is conceived and then the twin is created a few moments later, then God infuses a soul into the first baby, and when the second is created, He infuses a soul into the second baby, etc. Bottomline, the soul is infused into the human person at conception. Thus contraceptive techniques that do not prevent conception, but only prevent implantation in the womb are aborting (killing) a human being with a soul.
