Was the US ever dedicated to the Immaculate Conception Charles Thursday, November 18, 2004

Question:

Dear Brother, I thought that maybe you might be able to help.

A priest friend of mine, is working on a special homily for Dec. 8, for a group of high school boys on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. He seems to think that the U.S. was officially dedicated to the Immaculate Conception in 1954 to commemorate the 100th year anniversay of the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception. He can't remember if it was done formally and has searched the web to no avail.

Do you know if this was fomrally done that year? I don't know if a proclamation in 1847 by Pius IX making Mary the Patroness of the U.S. under the title of the Immaculate Conception was official or not. Maybe you can shed some light. Thanks and God Bless.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM+

Dear Charles:

In checking the website of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C., which is the patronal Church for the United States, I found this bit of history:

Mary is honored at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception as the patroness of the United States. Meeting in Baltimore, Md. in 1846, U.S. Catholic bishops placed the United States under the guidance and protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary under her title of the Immaculate Conception. Pope Pius IV ratified this action...

God bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
