sacramental marrage | Dean | Monday, November 15, 2004 |
Question: Mt wife and I have been married for 12 yrs. I converted from agnosticisem about 5 yrs ago my wife is a Babtist(non-practiceing).We were married by a justice of the peace and have not had our marriage blessed by the Church. From what I was told in RCIA and some other priests my marriage is considerd valad and sacramental by the Church since she was babtized and I was not when we were marriaged.I belive the reason is that my reception of the sacraments completed the sacramental bond between us and no blessing is needed to regularize our marriage. Is this correct, if not how do I regularize the marriage? We have 3 kids and another on the way although my wife wont convert to the Catholic faith our children are being raised Catholic. I'd hate to find out to late that my wife and I were living in a state of sin. Thanks for your help |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM+
Dear Dean: Yes, from what I understand, you do need to have your marriage regularized in the Church. To double-check this I would advise that you call your diocese offices and ask for someone from the Marriage Tribunal. Tell them your circumstances and ask if there is anything you need to do to ensure your marriage is valid and regularized in the Catholic Church. I commend your faith and obedience to want to make sure about this. I wish more Catholics had your integrity. God Bless, Footer Notes: This forum is for general questions on the faith.
