Intentionally not voting: a sin? Andrew Tuesday, November 2, 2004

Question:

I don't mean this to be another election question, but I'm a bit troubled by something I did and I'm not sure if it's a sin so... I wasn't sure if it was still okay to ask you or not. I'm sorry if it's not.

I've always hated politics, and this election confused the heck out of me, so when the registration deadline drew near I kept putting it off. Well now it's election day and I never registered, and I wish I had. There's nothing I can do to change that though. I'll go to adoration tonight... will pray a rosary or something for the election... it's all I can think of doing to make it up.

Other than being stupid, was that a sin?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM+

Dear Andrew:

Well, it appears that your title doesn't fit your situation. From what you are saying you did not "intentionally" refuse to vote; you just procrastinated until it was too late out of confusion.

Your prayers, however, were very helpful. It appears that Bush won.

Such things are not really sin. We all have a choice to vote or not. There are legitimate reasons for some people to never vote, by the way.

For most, there is an obligation to be good citizens and voting is part of that responsibility. But unless one deliberately chose not to vote in order that Kerry would have an advantage, it is not sin. It is, rather, an omission of prudence. Your prayers are reparation enough for that.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
