more than you can handle | Joseph | Sunday, October 31, 2004 |
Question: I've always believed that the saying, "God will never give you more than you can handle" was from the Bible. But lately I've heard that it's just a traditional saying. Now I believe that through God, all things are possible, but does it say anywhere in scripture that God really wont give you more than you can handle? I know that when they say "more than you can handle" this is never meant to say "handle with out God's help", so I don't want to make it seem all about semantics, but is this quote from the Bible, and if not, where does it come from? |

Dear Joseph: Thanks for your question. Yes, the Bible does teach us that God will not allow into our lives more than we can handle. It would be a cruel Father who allowed us to be overwhelmed in such a way that we could not survive it. There are at least three verses that refer to this truth: From 2 Tim 1:8 we learn that we can bear our hardship with the strength of God: "So do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord, From Romans 8:28 we learn that good comes out of even trials and tribulations, if we love God: "We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose." And the direct verse you are looking for where God proclaims His promise is 1 Cor 10: 13: "No trial has come to you but what is human. God is faithful and will not let you be tried beyond your strength; but with the trial he will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to bear it."
