Question:

My husband cheated and got another girl pregnant then abondended his wife and family for this girl and baby. They baptized this child in a Catholic church and there is no divorce or desperation agreement is he allowed to do this in Catholic church?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), CCD, LTh, DD, LNDC

Dear Carolyn:

I am sorry to hear about your husband's sin. We will pray for you and him.

Baptism of a child is suppose to happen only if there is a reasonable expectation that the child will be raised Catholic. It would seem to me that such expectation is not present given that the couple are in a adulterous relationship. Without knowing all the details there is not much more that I can say.

Regardless of this, however, the baptism is valid, even if it is not licit.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
