Sleeping in the Nude Michael Wednesday, March 1, 2017

Question:

Is there anything wrong with sleeping in the nude, alone in one's own bed?

I've done this my entire adult life and even occasionally as a kid. My father did too, and based on that, I assumed that most men stop wearing clothes to bed unless necessary after a certain age. I do get some sensory enjoyment from it, but it's the same type of enjoyment I get from having a good cigar, a hot shower, or a nice meal, and nothing explicitly sexual in nature.

I ask because I was recently in a conversation about morality where the topic managed to come up, and was told that good Catholics don't do this. The person who said that tends toward scrupulosity in general, but now it's got me wondering.

I've always considered sleeping naked a morally neutral act, and one that I would imagine is quite common even among faithful Catholics, but maybe I'm wrong. Can you please provide some clarification?

Thank you, and may Jesus Christ be praised.

Dear Michael:

The person you talked to about morality is incorrect. Sleeping in the nude in your own bed is morally neutral. There are many men and women who sleep in the nude, including faithful Catholics.

I would agree with you that your friend is being scrupulous, identifying sin or improper behavior where there is none. It is perfectly acceptable morally to sleep in the nude.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
