Is it a Mortal Sin to Lie on a Freelancing Website? Leo Saturday, December 10, 2016

Question:

Hello,

(Sorry for the long text. I just wanted you to understand the whole depth of my situation)

I hope you are doing well. I would like your help in something.

So, I'm a 21-year-old male from Africa. About a year ago, I joined Upwork - the online freelancing site. I created my profile and I could not score any jobs at all. After a while, I realized that the reason might be because I'm from a 3rd world country so there may be a negative perception. So what did I do? I created a fake profile that said I'm from Canada, using someone's picture. And no sooner had I done that than work started flowing in.

So here's the problem: I deliver good quality work and most of my clients have been nothing but satisfied with my work. As a matter of fact, I now have 3 long-term clients that I work with every week. I'm not scamming them by getting money without doing any work. The only issue is that they don't know my real identity. My question is, Am I earning money illegally by doing this? Am I committing a mortal sin? Isn't the most important thing that I'm getting the job done?

I'm conflicted because it's not like I'm lying on a dating site thereby playing with someone's feelings. Please advise.

Thanks,
Leo

Dear Leo:

From what you are telling me you are misrepresenting your identity online and to your customers. I am not a lawyer so I do not know what the legalities may be.

From a moral point-of-view, to misrepresent your identity, even though you are not scamming people, is a sin. Lying is a sin.

The Church teaches that the ends do not justify the means. We cannot use evil or wrong methods even it it results in something good. Both the means to the end, and the end itself, must be good.

I am reminded of the story of a man who committed a crime. He served his time and repented of his sin. The problem was getting a job. If he told the truth that he had a criminal conviction he would not do the job. He tried over a period of a year, applying for many jobs and telling the truth about his past. He did not even get an interview level of a job. He was getting desperate.

He applied for a job at a store. He knew he would never be hired if he told the truth, so he lied and did not reveal his criminal conviction. He got the job making $20,000 per year.

What the man did not know, but God did know, is that the business next door to the store was a company that made a point of hiring ex-convicts. Had the man told the truth when he applied to the store, and was thus not hired, he would have applied to the business next door. The company would have hired him at a salary of $50,000.

Because he gave up on God he missed out on a great job at a great salary.

I know it is difficult in any situation whereby prejudice keeps us from making a living. Nevertheless, we need to trust in God and we need to find a way to tell the truth despite the prejudice.

For example, if location of residence is not an issue in the services offered, a website can be constructed without mention of location of residence. All other information, however, such as name, picture, etc. must be truthful as posted. To omit the place of residence is not a lie, and thus is permitted.

In your case, I looked at the Upwork site. It does require a listing of your country.

The contract to use the Upwork site (User Agreement §3.2) states:

You agree to provide true, accurate, and complete information on your Profile and all registration and other forms you access on the Site or provide to us and to update your information to maintain its truthfulness, accuracy, and completeness.  You agree not to provide and to correct any information about your location, your business, your skills, or the services your business provides that is or becomes false or misleading.

By listing false information on your profile you are in contract breach. Upwork has the right to ban you from their site for this contract breach.

You need to update your profile to correct the false information. It is a sin to maintain this false identity even if doing so gives positive results. Trust is God. He will honor you for your integrity to tell the truth.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
