Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), LTh, DD
Dear Fred: Your manager is wrong. This is the problem with Protestants as they tend to make personal interpretations that sometimes can be rather wacko. Jesus tells us how to be saved, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God" (John 3:5) This is saying that we must be baptized and receive the Holy Spirit. The passage you refer to is John 13:8. The "no part of me" means that "Peter (and us) cannot be a disciples of Christ on our own terms but must submit ourselves to the divine plan already determined by the Lord" (Commentary, Ignatius Study Bible) That divine plan is that we are saved by the grace of God through our faith that begins with the salvific work of the Sacrament of Baptism, and continued today by our faith that is expressed in the works of love (faith without works of love is dead according to St. James), and the faith that allows us to die in a State of Grace, in our faith, brings us the final act of salvation. This Faith is necessary for salvation. The Lord himself affirms: "He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned" (Mk 16:16).
