Question:

Hello father,
I come from a dysfunctional family where faith is not practised and sometimes it's mocked. There is drunkenness and polygamy. My catholic friend advised me to offer Masses and do a litany of reparation for 6 months since my family's sins against God could block my life too and that I won't move forward until all those "doors" of sins are closed. This has really stressed me and I have been praying the reparation prayer from Vincentian brothers. I love God yet I feel sad my family's choices affect me too. What should I do? Where would I even start to do reparation for them? Please help

Dear Ana:

Thanks for the promotion, but I am a brother, not a father Wink

I am sorry to hear about your family background. Even if we did not know the details you know about your family, none of us can really know what ancestors or family members have done to place our families on Satan's radar.

Thus, all Christians, including you, ought to pray the prayer Renunciation of Ancestral Sins. This will close the door to any demons attached to family sins from entering your life.

You are not responsible for the sins of your family. Thus, there is only so much you can do. The advice you have already been given is good. In addition, you can do a genogram. We have the materials to do this here.

For family members who are still alive, yet caught in the bondage of their sins and not willing to repent and get right with God, the following prayers are useful:

Hedge Prayer for the Non-Christian for family who are not Christian
Hedge Prayer for our Separated Brethren for family who are Protestant
Hedge Prayer for Return of Wayward Catholics for family who is Catholic

In addition, for family who will not do this for themselves:

Proxy Deliverance Prayer for a Friend or Relative

Remember, that God does not force anyone. We each have free will, but these prayers may help your family to listen to the Holy Spirit some day.

Beyond these things, there is nothing more you can do except the testimony of your own life as a devout Catholic. Live your life, pray for your family, but get on with your life.

We will be praying for you and for your family.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
