Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), LTh, DD
Dear Ann: We do not know the extent knowledge that our loved ones in heaven may have of us here on earth. Certainly, those in heaven do not fret about the goings-on on earth as they are experiencing the bliss and beatific vision of God. There is no fretting or sorrow in heaven. God may grant what he wishes to the people in heaven to know the things of us on earth, but I do not think this is a ongoing knowledge. That is only my opinion. We do have a hint of this in Hebrews 12:1, which says that "we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses." We know the canonized Saints can hear us as the Church approves of praying to them. Thus, our loved ones in heaven may also hear us when we talk to them. This assumes our loved ones are in heaven. The only persons we know for sure who are in heaven are the Canonized Saints. Those in heaven do not have biological emotions as they are no longer biological beings. They do have the joys of the Spirit, but do not have emotions of sorrow, longing, or missing of loved ones on earth as these are biological/psychological emotions. Also remember, that in heaven there is no such thing a time. Thus, our great, great-grandparents who died 100 years ago, our deaths and entry into heaven, for them, will be in a blink of an eye. They do not experience the notion of 100 years. We will certainly pray for your father. I recommend that you can post that intention to our Prayer Team. God Bless,
