Question:

I'm continually tired and in constant pain with fibromyalgia and other illnesses. I have read about a therapy called Lightning process which appears to teach you how to deal with pain without painkillers. However as many of these therapies are new age based I don't want to do anything which is against Catholic teaching.

I live in Ireland and wonder if you knew anything about this and if it's ok. It think it is called the Phil Parker Lightning..

Thank you
Maureen

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), CCL, LTh, DD, LNDC

Dear Maureen:

I glanced through Parker's website. In my opinion his site is not professional. It looks like the typical style of all those people who claim all sorts of remedies. In the 19th Century such people were called "snake oil salesmen." I do not know if Parker fits that category, I am just giving my first impression of the website design.

In what I was able to read, it appears that Parker's system may have influences with Buddhism, and perhaps other Eastern philosophies and techniques. I did not have the time to listen to the free materials, so this is just an impression.

The basic guidelines to judge such programs is that any technique that requires a meditation of emptying one mind is to be avoided at all cost.

Any technique that places one in an altered state of consciousness or that empties the mind is to be avoided. Some techniques that do this include hypnosis, some relaxation exercises, some guided mediations, and some mediation practices. What is called New Age music can also bring one into a hypnotic state or altered state of consciousness.

Eastern Meditation is not consistent with Christianity and should be avoided by all Christians.

One should be wary of any "natural" therapies, medication or herbs, techniques, or program that promise to cure a wide range of ailments. There are no magic bullets that cure everything.

If any of this is even remotely included in Parker's system, then it should be avoided.

I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which Parker's program is suppose to help. For what it is worth, I am not going to use Parker's system.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary

P.S. The Church has issued a couple of documents that deal with Eastern techniques and the New Age:

Red Ball Jesus Christ The Bearer of the Water of Life: A Christian Reflection on the “New Age”, Pontifical Council for Culture / Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue

Red Ball Guidelines for Evaluating Reiki as an Alternative Therapy, Committee on Doctrine, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
