Baptism by Jesus and his disciples before Jesus' D & R Leon Tuesday, May 12, 2015

Question:

In John 3:22 After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he spent some time there with them and baptized.

If our baptism is into the death and resurrection of Jesus (CCC1227)....
Rm 6:3-4 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

Then, how does Jesus baptising with his disciples take effect before Jesus' death and resurrection? Are the merits of Jesus' death and resurrection applied in anticipation?

Is it similar to the way we understand Mary also needing Jesus as Saviour. With God applying the saving effects to Mary’s soul at the moment of her conception in anticipation of the redemptive suffering and death of his son on Calvary?

Thank You, God Bless.

Dear Leon:

The Navarre Bible Commentary answers this question:

A little later on (John 4:2) the evangelist makes it clear that it was not Jesus himself baptized, but his disciples. Our Lord probably wanted them from the very beginning to get practice in exhorting people to conversion. The rite referred to here was not yet Christian Baptism — which only began after the resurrection of Christ (cf. John 7:39; 16:7; Matthew 28:19) — but "both baptisms, that of St. John the Baptist and that of our Lord's disciples […], had a single-purpose — to bring the baptized to Christ […] And prepare the way for future faith" (St. John Chrysostom, Hom. on St. John, 29, 1).

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
