Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), LTh, DD
Dear George: You ask a good question. Catechism 841 quotes the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, Lumen Gentium, 16:
As you can see this paragraph is about the salvation of non-Christians. The "first place" among these are the Jews, our older brothers. Next are those who recognize the Creator, the first of which are the Muslims who look to Abraham and believe in One God. Then, look at the next sentence: "Nor is God far distant from those who in shadows and images seek the unknown God, for it is He who gives to all men life and breath and all things, and as Saviour wills that all men be saved." These are the pagans. This passage on the Muslims simply teaches that Muslims have a possibility to be saved. This Church teaching makes no comment about Islam's interpretation of the nature of God other than a connection to Abraham. It makes no mention on how Islam is intrinsically a violent religion with a false prophet. These are all facts, but here the Church is only saying that Muslims may have a chance at salvation. Thus, we are free to detail the problems of Islam and warn people of the threat of Islam to Christianity and to the world, which is the truth.
