Snake Handling in Churches Crystal Tuesday, March 10, 2015

Question:

Dear Brother,

I wanted to know your opinion on "Snake Handling" which is practiced in some Pentecostal Churches. Reason being, I was watching a Court Reality TV show, which had a dramatization of an actual case whereas the person got bit by a snake while attending this type of service and was suing the other person for their injuries.

I realize that some of these churches perform this ritual in regards to scriptures of the bible to remove our sins; but wouldn't this be somewhat dangerous?

If you could give me your opinion on this, I would like to know.

Thank you,
God Bless,
Crystal

Dear Crystal:

The Snake Handling practice is ridiculous, not Biblical, and highly dangerous. The Pentecostals, whose beliefs are commonly wrong, have misinterpreted Luke 10:19, which says, "Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall hurt you."

The serpents and scorpions are referring to demons. Jesus is saying that his disciples have authority over demons. This becomes obvious if we look and the full context (Luke 10:17-20) of what Jesus is saying:

The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!” And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall hurt you. Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you; but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

I mean, what part of this do these snake-handlers not understand? This is not rocket-science. But, this sort of nonsense is what happens when people split from the one true Church in the fullness of the faith — the Catholic Church. And, the further away from the Catholic Church one gets (Pentecostals did not come around until just before the 20th Century) the screwier groups get. This snake handling version of Pentecostalism is one of the wackiest. They are an embarrassment to the Body of Christ.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
