Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), LTh, DD
Dear Crystal: The Snake Handling practice is ridiculous, not Biblical, and highly dangerous. The Pentecostals, whose beliefs are commonly wrong, have misinterpreted Luke 10:19, which says, "Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall hurt you." The serpents and scorpions are referring to demons. Jesus is saying that his disciples have authority over demons. This becomes obvious if we look and the full context (Luke 10:17-20) of what Jesus is saying:
I mean, what part of this do these snake-handlers not understand? This is not rocket-science. But, this sort of nonsense is what happens when people split from the one true Church in the fullness of the faith — the Catholic Church. And, the further away from the Catholic Church one gets (Pentecostals did not come around until just before the 20th Century) the screwier groups get. This snake handling version of Pentecostalism is one of the wackiest. They are an embarrassment to the Body of Christ. God Bless, Footer Notes: This forum is for general questions on the faith.
