Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), LTh, DD
Dear Isabel: Circumcision was a sign of the Mosaic Covenent, not of the New Covenant. Thus, when the Mosaic Covenant ended when Christ died on the Cross and Rose Again, this practice ended as a requirement for salvation. The sign of the New Covenant is baptism. This matter was debated and resolved at the Council of Jerusalem and is recorded in the Bible in Acts 15., Other verses on the subject include Galatians 2:1-3; 5:1-11; 6:11-16; and 1 Corinthians 7:17-20. The Council of Jerusalem recorded in Acts 15:
The decision by Pope Peter was that Gentles did not need to be circumsized to be Christian and to be saved. The law of freedom allows parents to choose circumcision for their baby boys, and there are health reasons to justify this, but it is not required under the New Covenant of Christ. God Bless,
