Question:

What are your thoughts on listening to other religious beliefs and readings from clients whose beliefs differ from Catholicism?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), LTh, DD

Dear Sara:

I am sorry but your question is too cryptic. What do you mean by "clients"? Are these clients for a social worker, a counselor, or a doctor?

All I can say is that listening to a client's religious beliefs is not a problem, and may be a duty depending on what you mean by "client."

Listening to anyone's personal religious beliefs is not a problem in-and-of-itself. If, however, you are insecure about your Catholic beliefs then it is best to avoid conversations about non-Catholic beliefs that may confuse you or lead you away from the Catholic Faith. This is especially the case if the person is deliberately trying to convince you that the Catholic Church is wrong.

If one is insecure about their faith, then they need to learn their faith more thoroughly. This can be done by reading the Catechism, reading these Q&As, taking the free online bible study courses on Scott Hahn's St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology. These bible studies and other materials will prepare you to be confident in your faith.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
