Do catholics speak in tounges | maria | Tuesday, November 11, 2014 |
Question: Hi brother I also have another question that has been bothering me . Actually I need clarification on it. I truly believe in God and I want to love him more and do his will but certain doubts pop up. We say that God knows everything and he gave us free will because he loved us. So does God know everything that we will do beforehand? So when we do something sinful did God already know that we would do that sin? If so why can't God protect us from doing that sin? God has all the power, if God had forseen the human race misusing free will why did he still allow free will? I have read certain posts where you say God doesn't allow bad things to happen to us and that it's our choice. I really am trying to understand the relationship between the choices we make and what God wants us to do? I have read some place where you say that God doesn't allow bad things to happen to us. Then who does? Wouldn't God's grace save us? Please explain to me how to view such situation and what am I supposed to learn. |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), LTh, DD
Dear Maria: Yes, Catholics are "born again." All baptized persons are born again according to Jesus. We must look to what Jesus says about this and not some man-made notions of fundamentalist Protestants. Jesus said:
Born of water is baptism. Born of the Spirit is the indwelling Holy Spirit one receives at baptism. As for tongues, there may be some people who legitimately speak in tongues. I suspect, however, that most tongues are not legit. In any event, the Bible tells us that tongues is not important and that not everyone will speak in tongues.
God does not give the gift of tongues to everyone: (1 Corinthians 12:4-11) Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of working, but it is the same God who inspires them all in every one. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are inspired by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. (1 Corinthians 12: 27-31) Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, then healers, helpers, administrators, speakers in various kinds of tongues.29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way. That more excellent way is the next verse. It is love... (1 Corinthians 13:1) If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. For a full discussion of spiritual gifts see the essay, Charism Gifts Building Up the Church (pdf file). Take special notice of the "Pentecostalisms" that have contaminated the Charismatic Renewal in the Catholic Church. As to your other questions... God has complete knowledge of the past, present, and future. He knows all. Thus, yes, He knows our sins before we commit them. He knows the bad things that will happen before they happen. All this relates to Free Will. God gave us free will because he loves us and he wants us to love Him and each other. Love cannot be forced. It must be chosen. We cannot choose to love God or each other unless we have the freedom to make that choice. This is Free Will. However, with that freedom to choose love comes the possibility to choose not to love, to choose to reject God, to choose not love others, and even to choose to do evil. God allows all this because if He didn't no one could choose love as no one would have free will. Free Will is like pregnancy — either one is pregnant or she is not. One cannot be 99% pregnant. Well, either we have free will or we don't. We can't have 99% Free Will and 1% God forcing us to behave. Free Will must be 100% or we are not human but mere animals who live by instinct and response to their environments. They cannot choose to love. This means that we must suffer the consequences of our own sins that we choose to commit. It is not God's fault that we sin. Sin is our choice. It is also true that we must suffer the consequences of other people's sin. It is not God's fault that those other people sinned. Thus, if someone drives drunk, which is their free choice, and crashes into me causing me to be crippled, that is the consequence I must live with as a result of the drunk person's sin. God cannot stop any of this if He is to make us in His image, that is, if He is to make us creatures who can choose to love. God does protect us in the sense that He has given us His Son and His Church to help us in this life. Our protection is our Faith. This does not protect us from life's problems, but it does protect our souls. That is what is important. God can, however, try to convince us, to influence us, to lead us into making right decisions, but He will never force us. Forced "love" is called rape. God will never do that to us. God is always there to comfort us and to help us through the bad times if we let Him. He can bring good things even out of bad circumstances (Romans 8:28). This is the dilemma of Free Will. We cannot love without it, but with it we, and others, can also sin. We must rejoice that we have this gift of love, and trust in God when bad things happen. God never abandons us (Romans 8: 35, 37-39). God Bless, Footer Notes: This forum is for general questions on the faith.
