Jesus' DNA Mark Wednesday, August 6, 2014

Question:

If Jesus was "fully" human, and was the result of a virgin birth, how did he acquire the half of his DNA that did not come from Mary? Every human's DNA is acquired from both physical parents. If Jesus got half if his miraculously, then he was not fully human.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), LTh, DD

Dear Mark:

If God can miraculously impregnate a virgin I think he can miraculously provide the DNA to make him fully human. Jesus was fully human. There is no part of him, including DNA, that was not human. At the same time He was God. Fully human and fully God.

Your assertion that Jesus is not fully human if he got half of his DNA from Mary and half by a miracle of God is illogical and unscientific. What makes a person a biological human being is the DNA. It does not matter where that DNA came from. It makes us human biologically regardless. In any event, the creator of the Universe can make a fully human beings out of the rocks on the ground if He wishes. He is God. So I think He can solve the rather simplistic biological issue of DNA that make Jesus fully human.

How this can be true is a matter of faith, not science. Science could, however, if such science was around back then, prove without doubt that Jesus was human, but it is not within the competency of science to be able to prove his divinity.

While that is a matter of faith, much of what Jesus did in the performing of miracles and such authenticated His divinity phenomenologically and by the objective evidence of the miracles that were witnessed by many people.

Ultimately, this is a matter of faith. Those without faith will never understand and those with faith do not need to understand the mechanisms and whyfors as to how God accomplished this. It is intellectual pride and foolishness to expect that we can understand everything. We just know that He did incarnate as a man while retaining his divinity, fully man and fully God, and did so to fulfill His ancient promise of salvation. He has more than proved Himself through His revelation, the Word of God, the Holy Scriptures, and by the life, death, and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
