Padre Pio relic | G.D. | Saturday, May 3, 2014 |
Question: Dear Bro. Ignatius, How have you been? I have been reading a lot and praying to Padre Pio. I had the desire to have a relic that is credited to him. But when I looked online there were many for sale. Some very expensive. I would have loved it if someone just gave me one. But with that not happening I thought my only option is to purchase one. But when put this question on Catholic forum someone mentioned that I would be guilty of simony. It was definitely not my intention to get this relic for monetary gain. He said I had to earn it. How do I go about this? Thank you so much for your time. |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), LTh, DD
Dear G.D: Thanks for the inquiry. My health is not good, but I am still alive. It is simony to sell a relic, or to overprice the reliquary that contains the relic. One can buy these overpriced reliquaries containing relics in order to liberate the relic, if it is genuine, from the evil people who sell them. You will see relics for thousands of dollars on eBay that are contained in reliquaries that are not that expensive. In any event, it is best to go directly to associations of the saint you are interested in, or to buy relics from reputable Catholic sources (eBay is not a reliable source). Most relics contained in holy cards, medals and such are less than $5-$10. You can go directly to the Padre Pio Foundation to get relics of Padre Pio. This link takes you directly to their Gift Shop. Scroll down and you will find relics cards, medals, etc, for $1.25 - $4.00. There is a bracelet for $20.00. Here you are paying only for the container at a price to which the container is actually valued, and not for the relic itself. These are Third Class Relics. God Bless,
