Pardon Crucifix | Paul | Saturday, April 19, 2014 |
Question: Hello Brother Ignatius. I have a question: Are there any indulgences still attached to the pardon crucifix? I understand Pope St. Pius X attached many indulgences to the crucifix but could they have been abolished by Indulgentiarum Doctrina issued by Pope Paul VI. Thanks and God Bless. |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), LTh, DD
Dear Paul: The specific indulgence referenced by Pope St. Pius X is not in the third edition Handbook of Indulgences. In the norms, however, for the third edition of Handbook of Indulgences, number 18, "the Christian faithful gain a partial indulgence in devoutly using religious articles (crucifixes, crosses, rosaries, scapulars, medals) properly blessed by any priest or deacon." In addition, in the Grants, number 22, a partial indulgence is granted by saying the "good and gentle Jesus" prayer before a Crucifix. On Fridays of Lent a plenary indulgence, under the usual requirements, is granted who, after confession, recite this prayer before a crucifix. The list of indulgences found online is out-of-date. The third edition that I quoted is also out-of-date, but it is the one I have at the moment. The current fourth edition can be purchased here. You might find the one you are looking for in the 1957 edition of The Raccolta Prayers and Devotions Enriched with Indulgences, which I do not current have.
