Question Title Posted By Question Date
Holy Water Mary Saturday, February 22, 2014

Question:

Hello,

When taking water to be blessed by a priest does he have to say a special (particular) prayer to bless the water? What if he doesn't and instead pray a small prayer like a hail mary?

Thank you.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), LTh, DD

Dear Mary:

The Church has a designated prayer for the blessing of water. There is no priest with integrity that would bless anything with a mere Hail Mary.

The Blessing of Water outside of Mass that is in the official Book of Blessings can be found here. At the very least the priest should pray the blessing prayer out of this ritutal.

There is also the extraordinary form (pre-Vatican II) that a priest may also use. It is here.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
