Question:

Dear Bro. Ignatius

Is the “Catechism of the Catholic Church” without error? Infallible?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM+

Dear Russ:

The Catechism of the Catholic Church is the summary of Catholic teaching and thus it contains all four levels of Catholic teaching. Only Level 1 and Level 2 have the character of infallibility.

In terms of practical application, the issue of infallibility does not matter. All Catholics are bound to obey ALL of Catholic Teaching and Discipline that applies to them regardless of whether it is infallible or not.

While it is permitted to disagree in some measure and in some circumstances with Level 3 and Level 4 teaching, we can never disobey that teaching or any disciplinary directives. If we do, we sin.

Thus, as Catholics we are bound to obey ALL that is taught by the Church and summarized in the Catechism.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
