Question:

Please I would like to be directed to a concise treatment from the catholic perspective of the fundamental life questions such as the following:

Who am I?
Where do I come from?
What is my purpose?
What happens when I die?
Why am I here? Or “Why do I exist at all”
Where did I come from?
Where might I be going?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), CCL, LTh, DD, LNDC

Dear Eskor:

Who am I?

You are a creation and child of God.

Where do I come from?

You were created by your parents in conception, which at that very moment God gave you an unique and immortal soul.

What is my purpose?

You purpose is to love and serve God, and to love your neighbor as yourself.

What happens when I die?

At death your soul will be judged as to whether or not you died in friendship with God (a state of Grace). This is called the Particular Judgment. If you die in a state of grace your soul will go the heaven (or to heaven through purgatory). If you die in a state of sin, your soul will go to hell.

At the end of the age, at the General Judgment that takes place at the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, your body will be resurrected and reunited with your soul to then spend eternity in heaven or hell.

Why am I here? Or "Why do I exist at all"

"God made us to show forth His goodness and to share with us His everlasting happiness in heaven" (Baltimore Catechism #3). Also see "what is my purpose" above.

Where might I be going?

See "what happens when I die" above

For more information I refer you to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2nd Edition and the more simplified Baltimore Catechism. These catechisms contain the official teaching of the Catholic Church on the questions you are asking.

For example, here are some excerpts from the Baltimore Catechism:

1. Who made us?

God made us.

In the beginning, God created heaven and earth. (Genesis 1:1)

2. Who is God?

God is the Supreme Being, infinitely perfect, who made all things and keeps them in existence.

In him we live and move and have our being. (Acts 17:28)

3. Why did God make us?

God made us to show forth His goodness and to share with us His everlasting happiness in heaven.

Eye has not seen nor ear heard, nor has it entered into the heart of man, what things God has prepared for those who love him. (I Corinthians 2:9)

4. What must we do to gain the happiness of heaven?

To gain the happiness of heaven we must know, love, and serve God in this world.

Lay not up to yourselves treasures on earth; where the rust and moth consume and where thieves break through and steal. But lay up to yourselves treasures in heaven; where neither the rust nor moth doth consume, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. (Matthew 6:19-20)

...

48. What is man?

Man is a creature composed of body and soul, and made to the image and likeness of God.

And God created man to his own image. (Genesis 2:7)

49. Is this likeness to God in the body or in the soul?

This likeness to God is chiefly in the soul.

50. How is the soul like God?

The soul is like God because it is a spirit having understanding and free will, and is destined to live forever.

And the dust return into its earth, from whence it was, and the spirit return to God, who gave it. (Ecclesiastes 12:7)

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
