Question: Not having read the book and fearful that the book could contain statements that could be inaccurate or contrary to Catholic Church Teaching and Doctrine I ask you, Bro. Ignatius, if you have any information or comment that can be of help to me regarding this book. |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), CCL, LTh, DD, LNDC
Dear John: I know nothing about this book except what I read in reviews. A common theme in reviews iseems to be that the book has many flaws including lack of scholarship, errors in fact, historical inaccuracies, and the positing of opinion as if it were fact. There is one item that is certainly in error in O'Reilly's book is that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. The Bible never says this and neither does the Church. Pope Gregory I (c. 590-604), also known as Pope Gregory the Great, suggested that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. Pope Paul VI corrected this notion. Had O'Reilly used standard research skills, he should have known this. Thus, based upon reviews, and not my own reading of the book since I have not read the book, and O'Reilly's tendency to be tendentious at times, I have my doubts as to whether or not this book contains and accurate and objective history. There are many other books, by Popes, Saints, professional historians, and other qualified Catholic researchers that will give a true and accurate history of Jesus.
