Question Title Posted By Question Date
Are we the bread of life James Sunday, September 29, 2013

Question:

Dear brother,
What do you make of this song in our hymnals. We sang it today and frankly I'm a little disturbed by the words. Maybe I'm not reading into the words correctly. I may be wrong if so I will gladly sing it the next time it's sung during mass.

Its called "Bread of Life" by Rory Cooney and it's by OCP Publications. It starts, and I will capitalize the words I'm troubled by, "I myself am the bread of life; YOU AND I ARE THE BREAD OF LIFE, TAKEN AND SHARED BY CHRIST THAT WE MIGHT LIFE". Then on verse 2 it says "Here is God's kingdom given to us as food. THIS IS OUR BODY, THIS IS OUR BLOOD a living sign of God in Christ.

In John Jesus says that HE is the bread of life, so how can we say that WE are the bread of life?

Thanks for your critique.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), CCL, LTh, DD, LNDC

Dear James:

This so-called "hymn" seems to suggest a heresy. We are not the Bread of Life. Those are the words of Jesus describing himself.

I am appalled at how many dioceses and parishes include this evil hymn in their catalog of possible hymns to be used.

There needs to be some horse-whipping of the people who have approved this hymn for liturgy, be they bishop, priest, or choir director.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
