Question: Most Fundamentalist Protestants say that scripture just mentions the spiritual priesthood of all believers and that there's no such thing as a ministerial priesthood in the Church. They claim that the New Testament just mentions deacons and elders and that no priests are mentioned. Fundamentalists also say that none of the apostles were ordained by Jesus to any kind of priesthood because it wouldn't be necessary because Jesus was going to be the only and last High Priest who would offer Himself on the cross once and for all for the redemption of mankind. Brother, how can we Catholics defend the validity of the Catholic priesthood? Thanks and God bless. |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), CCL, LTh, DD, LNDC
Dear Anthony: As usual the fundamentalist is quite ignorant of the Bible, and are even more ignorant of anything resembling a proper interpretation. Their notions are man-made notions in which they force upon the Bible doctrines that they have already decided upon (and which are often specifically developed to counter the mean and evil Catholic Church). We must submit our opinions to the Word of God as interpreted by the Magisterium. This is one of the reasons that Jesus established a Church and Magisterium as to avoid these interpretative mistakes. For details on this subject I refer you to an article on the Catholic Answers website, Bishop, Priest, and Deacon and also an article on the Biblical Evidence for Catholicism website, The Biblical Evidence for Priests.
