Use of tampons Nancy Monday, September 2, 2013

Question:

Hello brother,
I would like to apologize in advance for the very private and personal question I am about to ask as I can't seem to find an answer anywhere online.

My question is in regards to the use of tampons by young catholic ladies who are virgins. If a young lady uses a tampon will she lose her virginity? this question also applies to the use of menstrual cups. What is the Catholic Church's position on this? Is there even one? Thank you and God Bless.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), CCL, LTh, DD, LNDC

Dear Nancy:

In times past the definition of virgin for a female was that the hymen was intact. That is a stupid definition since there are many ways the hymen may not be intact.

The proper definition of virgin is stated in the Catholic Dictionary: "A person is physically a virgin unless he or she has had sexual intercourse with a person of the opposite sex."

Thus, the use of a tampon, menstrual cups, or any other device does not jeopardize virginity. Virginity is lost only with sexual intercourse.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
