Question: Can a civil marriage be blessed by a priest and recognized by the church as valid under catholic teaching? |
||
Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), CCL, LTh, DD, LNDC
Dear Reynaldo: I praise God that you and your wife wish to come back into full communion with the Church and have your marriage blessed in the Church. The answer to your question is, Yes. Getting that done, however, depends upon whether or not either of you have been married before and whether or not either of you have been baptized. If either of you have been married before, then that person will have to petition the Church for an annulment. Ask your local priest about the procedure, and about baptism if that is needed. If there are no other impediments, then your marriage may be "regularized" in the Catholic Church. This is called convalidation. Contact your local parish priest and talk with him about your desire. He will then guide you and your wife through the process. God Bless, Footer Notes: This forum is for general questions on the faith.
