cloth with Holy oil during ordination Elaine Thursday, July 11, 2013

Question:

I was at a priest's first mass and he gave his mother a piece of cloth with Holy oils on it, the new priest said she will present this cloth to Jesus when she dies. A ticket to Heaven I guess, what do you think about this?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), CCL, LTh, DD, LNDC

Dear Elaine:

Sorry about the delay. I have been with my daughter whom I have not seen since 1994.

The cloth the priest gave to his mother is a wonderful and loving gesture. It the priest's first sacramental which he gave to his mother.

For him to say that she will present his cloth to God when she dies is also a gesture, not a ticket to heaven. You will have to ask the priest what he meant by that. Perhaps he meant it as an offering to God, through his mother, of his ministry. I do not know.

One thing is certain, there is nothing magical in the cloth or in any sacramental. No sacramental guarantees heaven, although many Catholics think otherwise. They are endangering themselves by superstitious thinking when they believe such things.

The only thing that guarantees heaven is dying in a State of Grace. God gives us every tool we need to accomplish that holy death.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
