disposing of tabernacle fabric jean marie Friday, June 21, 2013

Question:

Hello, I have just refurbished a tabernacle, and I am not sure how to dispose of the old fabrics which are full of a chemical glue that would give bad fumes off if burned.
I wondered if these have any sacred character or if my love of the Blessed Sacrament is making me too cautious.

It just feels wrong to throw them in the bin.
thanks as ever for your advice

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), CCL, LTh, DD, LNDC

Dear Jean Marie:

What I would advise you to do, since this fabric was in a sacred vessel reserving our Lord, is to do the same thing we do with any blessed object that is to be discarded. Cut up the fabric. That removes any blessing when it no longer resembles what it was. Then, since burning would be dangerous, take the pieces without burning them, and bury the peices in the ground.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
